LOANO

In the eighth century it became a fief of the monastery of the Benedictine monks of San Pietro in Varatella, who founded near the present church of the Port of Loreto.

During the twelfth century it was a domain of the neighboring Episcopal Albenga until the acquisition by Oberto Doria in 1263 which, together with his son Raffo, persuaded residents to displacement of the population near the coast. From 1263 until the Napoleonic period, except for a short period of domination by Fieschi, the city was continuously county of principles Doria.

Conrad III in 1505 sold the village to the Doria family, the Fieschi di Lavagna, confirming the transfer of power even in the imperial diploma of 1514. Following the conspiracy of the Fieschi in 1547, the emperor took the feud by placing them under the jurisdiction of the governor of Milan and then assign it to Gian Andrea Doria.

Now held by the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861) in 1735, by order of that Charles VI of Austria (1736) the village was under the control of the Genoese Doria family, who held the title of Loano principles. Longer the domain of Doria around 1770, it went to the Republic of Genoa, which followed the fortunes during the Napoleonic era and after restoration. On November 23, 1795 Loano was fought the first battle between the French army against the Austro-Sardo, won by Bleus Soldiers
